Based on data obtained from the Bureau of Justice Statistics' (BJS') 2017 National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), this report indicates from a national representative sample of households how many persons age 12 or older were victims of violent or property crime within the last 6 months in 2017, whether or not the crimes were reported to police; and trends in these data are reported from ...The violent victimization rate increased from 16.5 victimizations per 1,000 persons in 2021 to 23.5 per 1,000 in 2022. From 1993 to 2022, the overall rate of violent victimization declined from 79.8 to 23.5 victimizations per 1,000 persons age 12 or older. In 2022, about 2 in 5 (42%) violent victimizations were reported to police.The rate of robbery victimization increased from 1.7 per 1,000 persons in 2016 to 2.3 in 2017.
